GREYHOUND “GOLD RUSH.”
Now that the Wembley Stadium has been bought for greyhound racing, and with tracks by the dozen being laid out all over the country, there is something like a “famine ” of racing greyhounds, says a London paper. The shortage is not due solely to the sudden popularity of electric hare chasing in England; there is a big demand for first-class greyhounds from the United States-; and what the United States want they will have, because they can pay. Actually £2OOO was paid for three dogs which were shipped to America recently. First-class dogs which cost £3O three months ago—and perhaps £lO six months ago—are now fetching anything .between £3OO and £SOO. Of course, such prices are only paid for really fine dogs which are giving a consistently good account of themselves on the track. At the moment there seems to be nothing that can check the dog racing “gold rush”-—bar the rather important fact that there are not enough dogs in the country to run on all the tracks which are proposed.
