A SPLENDID RECORD.
PRtSONERS' AID ASSOCBATIOW. The following extract from the annual report of the Prisoners' Aid Association of New South Wales, gives some indication of the splendid work being carried out by the body. "During the year 3759 persons were interviewed, drunkenness, as usuai, being the charge in the majority of cases, which meant detainment for a few hours in the cells. In their case help was not required. i "Efforts were made in 1727 cases, | and of this number 1238 were successfully dealt villi, as follows: —Fines wore collected from friends or emptovers in G 6-5 cases, amounting to £3230 lis sd. Sureties were obtained fur 20 persons, and the amount collected therefrom was £2lO 5s sd, bail was secured for 545. j "As the result of these efforts, 900 j persons were enabled to resume their J ordinary occupation, and, in addition, Lho State was'richer by the saving of £2392 Gs 7d in the maintenance oi' [hose persons if their lines had not been collected." In addition I tie association assisted 375 prisoners to obtain employment upon release. Of these 108 were first-offenders, 51 had one previous! conviction and 217'each had two or more sentences. j Out of the 376 assisted, only 52 I were re-convicted—'l2 males and 10 j females. ~
