HAMILTON’S UNEMPLOYED
RELIEF LOAN RUNNING OUT. PROSPECTS NOT BRIGHT. Although not apparent to the casual observer there is a good deal of poverty and unemployment in Hamilton at the present time. The Borough Council has been doing what it can to provide relief work, and has at present 80 casual men employed, but the loan of £931 which was raised for the purpose of providing relief work and which carried a subsidy bringing the amount to £1,400, is almost expended and will only last about another fortnight. The Waitcwhiriwhiri Stream contract is also nearing completion and in three weeks’ time it is anticipated that a further 40 'men from this undertaking will be throwm out of work. The council is considering applying for a further loan of £3,000 for relief work and if this is granted it will he applied to effecting very necessary improvements at the Seddon Terrace Gully, behind Rugby Park wdiich connects Whiliora with Maeroa. There is still about £SO left in the Mavor’s special fund, and His Worship the” Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, informs us that there'has been no leaning on this fund —that only in cases of sheer necessity have applications for cash relief been made. Owing to the amount of broken time due to the wet weather, the measure of relief from relief work, has, not been so great as in former years, and many families have had a far greater struggle than has been apparent. , J If the loan of £3OOO is not granted the unemployed position is likely to become very acute.
