It Js understood there is a proposal to replace the " silent policemen " at Hamilton street intersections by painted white lines.
The question of providing a Mayoral chain of office was last night'referred to a committee of the Hamilton Borough Council.
Authority was last night given the Hamilton borough engineer to spend up to £25 in improving the access from Memorial Park to Cook Street, to provide an extension of the river path to Hamilton East.
Applications by Aylmer Leo Ludwig for a taxi-driver's license, and Henry Hinton for a bottle gatherer's license, were approved by the Hamilton Borough Council last night, while E. R. Williams was granted a renewal of his secondhand dealer's license.
The Hamilton East Citizens' Association has written to the Borough Council voicing its unanimous approval of the new system of lighting in Grey Street, and thanking it for its action, as well as expressing its appreciation of the manner in which its requests or suggestions have been dealt with.
The matter of a motor camping site in Hiltsboro' Terrace was last night referred by the Hamilton Borough Council to a special committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Luxford and Field to confer with the Beautifying Society and Automobile Association and report to the council.
The Lands Department has advised the Hamilton Borough Council that from its point of view there is no objection to land shown as Hinemoa Street, but which is portion of the Hamilton Domain, being proclaimed a street.
The repainting of the swimming pool walls in the Hamilton Municipal Baths and the renewal of the woodwork in some of the dressing sheds, together with other attention, estimated to cost a total of £25, will be undertaken shortly. This is in accordance with a recommendation made by Gr. Gilbert last night.
The 55th annual report of the Thames Gas Company, Ltd., states that the profit for the year ended July 31 amounted to £495. The amount brought forward from last year was £lO4l, making a total of £IS3G. From this the directors recommend the payment of a : dividend of lid a sTlare (about 4 per cent.), amounting to £455, leaving to be carried forward, £lOBl.
"For years past it has been the policy of the Government to give a reasonable amount of preference to the New Zealand manufacturers when materials are required for Government works, and the policy will be followed in connection with the construction of the new railway station in Auckland," said the Minister of Finance, lion. W. Downie Stewart, in the House.
Mr George Peacock, general manager of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, who was in Hamilton yesterday, expressed himself as greatly impressed with the natural beauties of the town. Referring to the activities of the Beautifying Society, he considered the borough was to be congratulated upon having a band of public-spirited men who had done so much to add to the attractions of the town.
The Frankton Ratepayers' and Citizens' Association wrote to the Hamilton Borough Council last night urging it to instruct the poundkecper to give more frequent attention to wandering stock, particularly at night, in and around Frankton. It was stated that in Colombo Street and on Killarney Road horses were turned out regularly and made the footpaths their stamping ground, causing damage, apart from their menace to traffic. The council decided to take action.
No fatal accident to any train passenger in New Zealand occurred in the twelve months for which the report has just been issued. The Minister (Hon. J. G. Coates) remarks: ."With over 20,000,000 passengers carried this is a result of which the public and the staff may feel proud. The number of accidents to trains involving passengers and employees was six, as compared with 41 the previous year. Personal accidents on the line (other than train accidents) totalled 20 less than for the year 1925-20. Shunting accidents likewise show a satisfactory decrease.''
