MINISTER OF MINES.

vtsnr TO HUNTLY. The Minister of Mines, Hon. G. J. Anderson, the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.G.L., Messrs, J. Linklater and T. W. Rhodes, M’s. P., and Mr A. H. Kimbell, under-secretary for mines, arrived at Huntly yesterday from Thames, and were "shown over the Rotowaro mine by Mr J. Watson, manager of the Taupiri mines.

The visitors inspected a new coalcutting machine, the latest type on the market, and were given a practical demonstration. The Minister said he was impressed with the machine, but he would not say whether he was prepared to install this machine in the South Island colleries. A deputation from the Huntly Town Board asked for assistance in metalling the road between Huntly and Glen Afton, and the Minister promised to recommend the application. A further request was made by the board that the train from Glen Afton to Huntly be made a purely passenger train instead of a mixed passenger and goods train. As 400 men travelled daily, the board considered the men were entitled to the same comfort and consideration as suburban passengers. The Minister promised to bring the matter before the Railway Department.

The board also asked for Government assistance in acquiring and laying out a recreation ground. It was stated that the Government had previously promised to grant £SOO for this purpose, but the project had now lapsed. The Minister promised to do everything possible to assist in Hi© matter.
