WAIKATO DIOCESE.

STANDING COMMITTEE MEETS.

IMPORTANT SUBJECTS DISCUSSED.

The monthly meeting of the Standing Committee of the Waikato Diocese was held at the Diocesan Office yesterday, the Bishop (the Right Rev. C. A. Cherrington) presiding.

The Bishop reported the institution of the Rev. R. 11. Trill and the Rev. R. W. Alexander as vicars of Tc Awamutu and Whangamomona respectively; the departure of the Rev. A. Drake from Te Kuiti; and the impending institution of the Rev. C. N. Luker as vicar of Uruti.

The appointment of Mr H. I. Foster as diocesan consulting architect was approved and confirmed. A number of applications for grants for various purposes from different parochial districts were dealt with. The formation of Aria and Pio Pio into a parochial district -was discussed at length, and agreed upon; a substantial grant in aid will be forthcoming, and a vicar appointed as soon as possible. Committees Appointed. A sub-committee was appointed to consider the difficulties under which the King Country districts are labouring in the acquiring of the freehold of their church properties, and in ministering to the needs_ of the sparsely populated areas in that part of the diocese.

It was settled that the Standing Committee shall meet every two months, and that at least txvo of such meetings 'should be held in Taranaki during the course of the year. An executive committee was set up to deal with urgent matters, Mr T. G. Hirst, of New Plymouth, being appointed to represent Taran'aki. Other committees were appointed to deal with various departments of work. Maori Missions. The thanks of the Standing Committee were conveyed to the 11. and W. Williams’ Trust for the substantial help which is being given to the work of the Church in the diocese amongst the Maoris; the Bishop was requested to bring before the Board of Missions Ihc desirability of bringing the Maori Mission under the head of co-ordin-ated missions, otherwise the diocese cannot continue to bear so heavy an assessment as it has done in the past for foreign missions. Financial Position.

The financial position of the diocese was reviewed, and although it was recognised that the resources of the Church would be a matter of considerable anxiety for some time to come, in view of the many urgent calls for help from all over the diocese, yet the position was not other than could be expected in a newly-formed diocese. It was left to the executive to take such steps as are considered advisable for further enlarging the capital funds of the diocese in response to the Bishop’s appeal. Accounts totalling £2I6S 16s lid were passed for payment.

Appointments. The Very Rev. the Dean of Hamitlon was appointed to succeed the Rev. A. Drake, resigned, as clerical representative of the Diocese on the Pension Board. The Diocesan Magazine’s report was received and adopted, and appreciation expressed at the. usefulness of their periodical. A Diocesan Year Book, together with the statistics of the diocese, is to be published towards the end of tlio year. Plans Approved. Plans for alterations and additions to the churches at Taumarunui and Kakahi, and for additions to the Parish Hall at Morrinsville were approved.
