CANTERBURY MEETING.

TRAINING AT RICCARTON.

INTERESTING WORK

(By Telegraph.—Special to Times.)

CHRISTCHURCII, Tuesday

The weather was beautiful at Riccarton this mornjng. The outside of the course proper and the steeplechase course proper were open for fast work and schooling. They were in perfect order.

Ilathor, who broke down the other day, has returned to the North Island. Royal Read pleased by running half a mile in. 50 4-sscc. He is a greatly improved gelding.

Magna Gharta, with over 10.0 up, was held back to Satrap, with a feather weight, while they ran six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. The race he had last Saturday has done Magna Gharta a lot of good. The first two furlongs were run in 25scc.

Cornstalk was too good for Margarenbirney (both having light boys up) over seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. He is an arrant rogue.

Huikai beat Tarleton easily over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. This was a smart performance. Moorland dashed over half a mile in 50 l-irsec. He is doing well.

Coastguard (A.Ellis) out-jumped and out-galloped Rangatahi (R. Thompson) in a schooling gallop over six flights of hurdles. He is very well.

Thurndale, with a welter weight up, was easily too good for Mahjong, with a light weight, over five furlongs in I.G.

Charlatan, carrying 10.0, was better than Sir Wai, 5.7, over a mile in 1.54 3-5. Ho is in good shape, but the National Steeplechase course may prove just a little too far for him.

At a Very Short Price.

Maunga went freely while doing three-quarter pace work. He and Magna Gharta are at a very short price for their respective races. Gold Mint beat Rine Manga easily over five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, and Nincompoop was too good for Beaming over the same ground in 1.5 2-5. After Bandolero had refused to jump the fences on the course proper he was schooled with Good Form and Ploiurhboy over the schooling fences. He and Good Form jumped well. Ploughboy lost his rider at the third fence. Gav Huron and Aberfeldy galloped a mile together, with small boys up. Gay Queen had slightly the best of the argument in the good time of 1.47 3-5. Both arc very well. Aberfeldy is a good jumper, but Gay Queen is not. Peter Maxwell, who has lightened up, galloped a mile in 1.52 2-5 with a light weight up. He was tender in front afterwards. Gaze, Pcrle de Leon, and Royal Form schooled together over six flights of hurdles. Tholomon joined in over the last four. Gaze forced the pace, jumping well. At the second last fence it looked as if Pcrie dc Leon would catch him, but he crashed through it, and only just saved himself from falling. Then Royal Form, who had been ridden patienllv* went on and jumped the last fence with Gaze. The time for the last round, 1.48, was really good. Assurance and Master Clarence, with feather weights up, galloped six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, while Beau Cavalier, with onlv a light weight up, took 1.54 to run a mile. Ridden out, he went scratchily.

Chickwheat and Soltoe were companions in a seven-furlongs gallop with small bovs aboard. It was a good go, and the time, 1.32 3-5, was smart. Taboo and Solferite, with featherweights up, went six furlongs in 1.19 2-5. Jockey Heavily Thrown. There was only one schooling gallop over the steeplechase fences on the course proper, and, as usual, it was not a success. On this occasion Zircon caused most of the trouble. Seven horses took part in the gallop—Zircon (E. Warner), Kawiui (A. McDonald), looking a picture, Scamp (E. Mackie), Tula (Bert Ellis), Greenstone (E. Ellis), Kapuna (A. Ruthvcn), and Grown Coin (R. Thompson). They started off with the sod wall, which is close to the nine-furlongs barrier. At the first fence Scamp, Zircon and Kawini led from Tuki, Greenstone and Kapuna, who were close up, while Grown Coin, who brought up the rear, tried to stop. The rest jumped bcaulifullv. They raced over the post and rails, kennels double, and sod wall in the same formation, the pace being a cracker, and Crown Coin trying to stick at every fence. Over the sod wall Scamp was done, and Zircon went on Willi a slight lead from Kawini, and then the trouble started, for Zircon dived off the next fence, a brush, taking Kawini with him, and throwing those immediately behind into a heap, owing to. their wanting to follow him. Kapuna and Tuki got over with a scramble, but Greenstone fell, and Crown Coin, coming along, fell also, Continuing on his wild career, Zircon dodged off the next fence, but Kawini, Tuki, Kapuna and Scamp jumped it perfectly. Warner tried to keep Zircon at the last fence (Cults'), but off he went again, and in diving for the sciaping sheds he threw Warner heavily. Warner's skull cap was burst and he got a very bad shaking, but he did not think any bones were broken. After a short rest he was driven off to the hospital by Mr P. D. McNah. Zircon was not hurt. It is any odds that he does not complete the course in the National, although he can jump when he likes.

Grown Goin was very lame behind on returning to the bird cage, and can be looked upon as a very doubtful starter in the National. If he docs run he will never complete the course. This morning Thompson had to ride him into every fence witli the whip on. lie would have stopped. Kawini, Tuki and Kapuna gave beautiful exhibitions. BEAU GESTE SCRATCHED. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tpesday. Beau Geste was scratched for the Winter Cup at 11.30 to-day.
