SAYS HE IS KLEPTOMANIAC. HAS PLENTY OF MONEY. "J am a kleptomaniac; I can't help stealing," is vvliat Thomas Barrett '(58), a dentist, said lo a defective when arrested at Nock and Kirby's, Ltd., Sydney. Barrett pleaded guilty to having stolen a number of articles, valued at *£2 Is, from the firm. Detective Jourdain stated that he saw defendant take the articles and place them in his overcoat pocket. Mr Laidlaw, S.M.: What did he say when you arrested him? Detective Jourdain: He said he was a kleptomaniac,- and did not know what lie was doing. He is a dentist with a good practice, and owns a house at Greenwich which cost thousands to build. The tools in his workshop arc worth hundreds of pounds. Mr Laidlaw (to defendant): have you got lo say? Defendant? I was drunk last night, or I would not have done what I did. Mr Laidlaw: You arc evidently not a" man who is short of money; you have no excuse for doing this. Barrett was fined £2O, in default three months' hard labour.
