PORTRAIT OF SHOPGIRL.

Romance is associated with a picture, ‘‘The Lotus,” to toe hung at this year’s Academy in London, the work of Miss Margaret Lindsay Williams, a Welsh artist. One afternoon, three months ago, Miss Williams was in a Cardiff cafe when she noticed a young girl, petite and dark-haired, enter ihe cash desk. The artist studied the girl and afterwards suggested that she might sit for a portrait painting. Surprised and excited by the offer, the girl consented. Her name is Mabel Taylor, and the title the artist gave to her picture was ‘‘The Lotus.” Miss Taylor, aged 19 years, has sleek black bobbed hair, beautiful blue eyes fringed with long black eyelashes, straight brows, and a creamy pale compLexion.
