ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
BOARDING A MOVING TRAIN. FATALITY AT TURAKINA. MARTON, Saturday. A shocking accident occurred at thi railway station at Turakina on Thursday evening when Timothy Hartnell, single, aged 48, in attempting to board a moving train fell on the track. He was run over by the guard’s van and shockingly mutilated, death being instantaneous. Deceased, with a companion, Peter Cameron, was travelling from Wanganui to Owhango. Both got off at Turakina and repaired to the noun Hajoining the station. While there they heard the train move off. Both ran to the station, where Cameron successfully boarded the last carriage. Deceased caught the hand rail and attempted to swing himself aboard, but he seemed to lose his hold and fell between the carriage and the platform The guard’s van passed over him and when the train stopped he was found to be dead. Hartnell was a native of Tasmania and resided at Wanganui, where lie had two brothers.
At the inquest, the verdict was accidental death. '
MARTON, Saturday.
When J. Neale, a borough workman, was repairing a street drain on Thursday a motor lorry driver failed to observe the excavation and drove over Neale, whose head was caught in the under part of the lorry. He sustained a slight concussion and was admitted to the hospital. SCHOOLGIRL INJURED. HURT BY HORSE. Injuries to her legs were'Yu named by Evelyn Reid, a Kaipaki schoolgirl, aged 11 years, when she fell from he? horse and the animal trod on her.
CHRISTCHURCH, Friday.
A miraculous escape from death' was experienced by Mr J. Bryan, of Cashmere Hills, when a flve-seater motor car which he was driving went over a bank on Hackthorne Road. WELLINGTON, Friday.
An elderly widow, Mrs Mary Pope, of Tasman Street, suddenly collapsed and died in the Chief Post Office yesterday morning. •
ROTORUA, Thursday
A carpenter, Mr George W. Schultze, engaged in the erection of the Rotorua High School, was at work at the circular saw when his hand was caught. It. was found necessary to amputate four fingers.' DUNEDIN, Friday.
The body of Annie Harrie Wimperis, who had been missing from her home since yesterday, was discovered this morning hanging from a tree near Bruce Street, Rosyln. It was stated at the inquest ttiat deceased had suffered from ill-health. The coroner returned a verdict of suicide by hanging, while of unsound mind.
Mr A. C. Valdez, a Californian evangelist, who has conducted a twelve months’ campaign in Australia and New Zealand, will address a meet-*, mg in Liberty Hall to-morrow evening. Mr Valdez has conducted services in Miss Aime McPherson’s temple, Los Angeles.
