THE COOK ISLANDS.
TOUR OF INSPECTION.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday
Mr 11. Ayson, Resident Commissioner of the Cook Islands, has just completed a three-months’ cruise on a tour of inspection.
At Palmerston Island lie found that the coconut trees which were damaged in llie hurricane of 1914 were coming* to bearing again, and at Suwarrow Island Hie pearl slid 1 and pipi pearl trade received attention. The bottom has fallen out of the fish industry owing to the situation in Europe and the deerasing use of pearl buttons. Money was still being earned for the latter, but the demand was not keen. Regulations have been made to confine diving lo limited periods, and it was decided that tests be made with machines in deep water beyond the ordinary diver’s reach.
