DUTY ON HATS. A CONSERVATIVE'S SUGGESTION. (Received April 13, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 12. Replying to Lieutenant-Colonel Applin (Conservative member for Enfield) in the House of Commons today, Mr Winston Churchill (Chancellor of the Exchequer) said he had not considered a 10 per cent, duty on women's hats.
Lieutenant-Colonel Applin: At least 50,000,000 hats are sold yearly, and a tax of 10 per cent, would give you £1,260,000.
Mr Churchill: I’ve enough blood on my hands. (Loud laughter..''
