FLOODS IN QUEENSLAND.
WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. BRISBANE, January 30. Owing to the Condamine River overflowing its banks, branch-line trains in Southern Queensland have been held up. _ < Large numbers of soldier settlers and their families at Cecil Plains have been isolated, and it will be impossible for them to obtain the necessities of life until the river goes down. The river is now rising at the rate of Gin an hour. At Nangee the whole country is covered by a sheet of water, which is two or three feet deep in some places. At Maryborough a youth was drowned while he was attempting to swim to an island in the Mary River. The latter is now receding. Further landslides are reported to have occurred at Palm Woods. One of these damaged the residences of three settlers. Serious slides also occurred among the banana plantations in the Nerang district. Acres of land, carrying thousands of bunches of bananas, slipped down the mountain side and have been washed into the Nerang River.
