BEAM WIRELESS.
SUCCESS OF EXPERIMENT. INAUGURATION OF SERVICE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, January 21. It will be at least a fortnight before the inauguration of the beam service is possible; firstly, lac cause time is likely to be taken for analysing the results for the purpose of determining the period when a stabilised service may best he achieved; secondly, because the Canadian experiments with alternate wave lengths may point a solution of the difficulties to Australia.. It is no secret that the Canadian service is subject to bad fading out, sometimes for the best part of 24 hours. Experts believe that a resort lo a longer wave length during these times will overcome fading. The theory is being tried out for a few days. Meanwhile it is interesting to learn that China is throughout the whole day picking up our Beam better than Australia. The explanation is that outgoing waves, seeking* the most direct route, travel from London slightly north of cast before finally dipping to Australia.
While it is obviously possible to conform to Ihe requirements of a seven-hours’ clay broken time, with an average of 100 words a minute, experimenters are now aiming to secure a certain all-hours’ service, even if it is at a less speed. Tests show that signals from Melbourne reach London in one-twenlietli of a second.
