Evans, Meredith, Bell jun., and Bell snr., went out in Ihe second round yesterday, when Ihe team from St, John's (Wanganui)-skipped by Benefield. accounted for the Hamilton side by 23—10. The Southerners established a lead early in the fray and were always able to hold it. to win

comfortably. Norrie Bell jnr. played a great game as third, frequently coming to the aid of his side. The skip was also reliable but Evans and Meredith were off their games. Jones, Robinson, Maclntyre and Pilkington (Hamilton) had affairs very much their own way in their first and second round games yesterday against James (Cambridge) and Scrivener (Wanganui East). In the third round the Hamilton team met Harraway (Green Island). The Southerner was in control of the champion rink last season, while Pilkington had that distinction the previous year. It was a memorable game yesterday, which the Hamilton quartette won by 21—18. They went away with such a good lead that it looked, in the early stages, that Pilkington and his men would have matters much their own way, but a spurt by the Southerners left them only three down on the 11th. When there were prospects of the game coming level on the 16th, Pilkington played great bowls and turning the head well in his favour, left Hamilton five to the good on the aggregate. A successful driving effort by the South Island skip brought the tallies level on the 18th. There was some great drawing and driving witnessed during the remaining heads, both skips continuing to play splendidly. Pilkington was two to the good as they rolled to the last bead. In endeavouring to transform a down situation on the head Harraway picked up the jack, but it rcnounded from the bank on to the green. If the ditch had been the jack's resting place, the teams would again have stood level. The spectators frequently applauded the wonderful bowling during the contest.
