WHITEBAIT FISHING.

A SUNDAY CALLING. CONVICTION RECORDED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.; PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. Reserved decision in the case in which Charles Hetherington and three native women were charged with working at their calling on Sunday within view of a public place, by fishing for whitebait on the banks of the Waikato River, on October 24, was given by Mr J. W. Poynton S.M., in the Pukekohe Police Court today. s The magistrate said the only question to be decided was whether the banks of the Waikato River were a public place within the meaning of the Police Offences Act The magistrate said he thought they were a public place. The Waikato was a large navigable river open to the public. On Sundays boating parties went out on it for pleasure and it would increase in popularity in this respect. Hetherington was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 17s. Security for appeal was fixed at £lO. The case of the Maori women was dismissed as trifling, they being merely ordered to pay costs, £1 18s Gd each.
