MEETING OF QOUNCIL. |riWtt<lip>M| RATES COMING IN B^EELY. The fortnightly meeting of, the Ngaruawahia Borough Council held last evening, the Mayor (M.'r 11. JSampson) presiding. There were present: Crs. J. S. Johnston, W. H. Patcrson, S. S. Saulbrey, A. B.< Jones, 11. Morris, D. W. Thomas, and-Mr F. R. Walters (town clerk). The treasurer reported that 6W per cent, of the year's rates was in hand. Receipts from all sources since last meeting totalled £226 AOsThe district fund account was debf&sd with £057 12s, and the water loan and domain accounts were £74 3s ami £ir>o lis in credit, Permission was granted to Mr It-, Gibb to erect two Bowser pumps on , the footpath outside his premises at a rental of £o each per annum. Wsirfare Against Rats. The Department of Health drew attention to the necessity for waging constant warfare against the increase of' rats,, and urged that all measures should be continued fcr the extermination of the pests. The Australasian Performing Right Association, Ltd., a society protecting the interests of music publishers, drew attention to the fact that it was illegal to use copyrighted music in entertainments for public, or private benefit without paying a fee to tho publishers. The minimum rate was 25s per annum. After discussion it was resolved, on Gr. Jones' motion, that the council should not pay a fee, and that anyone leasing the hall should be notified that the council accepted no responsibility for their using copyright music. The Ngaruawahia postmaster advised that the Post and Telegraph Department had approved of the erection of a receiving box for letters at the corner of Belt Street and Hamilton Road, as desired by the council. An Indignation Meeting. Correspondence was received from the Maeroa Ratepayers' Association asking for support at an indignation meeting being held with the object of bringing about a further reduction in the cost per unit of electric light and abolition of meter rents. Several councillors expressed the opinion that the Power Board had the interests of the ratepayers at heart, and would make a reduction in the rates without any urging if they thought fit, It was decided to notify the Maeroa Ratepayers' Association that the council reposed full confidence in the Power Board. .Mr J\ McKay, whose lease of the grazing rights of the Domain was recently" tei'mmaied by the council, complained that he had been treated "very dishonestly" in the matter. He asked whether he was to be compensated for the manure he had put on the ground and the fencing he had put up. The Mayor: I Hunk lie has been treated fairly. He fully understood the terms of the agreement when he leased the Domain, and fenced on his own responsibility. The letter was received. The foreman reported that part of Durham Street had been sanded, and shingle had been spread on the Great South Road, Huntry Road, Jesmond Road, and Jesmond Street. Thirty vards of gravel had been spread on the. Hamilton Road, and a contract for spreading 100 yards of gravel had; been completed.
