ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
: " f Wednesday. •' A settler, J. R. Temperly, aged 60, who was farming on Nanncsted's line, Bunnythorpe, was found dead on the bank of a stream running through his property this morning. Deceased arose early, and later, when his wife awakened she discovered a cheque on the table. Becoming alarmed a search was made, with the result deceased's body was found with a wound in the head, and with a gun alongside. ROTORUA, Wednesday. A motor lorry containing, a survey party overturned on the Te Ngae Road yesterday, when proceeding to Otaramarae. The lorry was passing a service car and swerved. In turning to come back on to the road it suddenly upset. Mr M. Mitchell was rendered unconscious, Mr Allen received a severe gash on one of his legs, and most of the others sustained minor injuries. The sufferers were brought to the King George Hospital for treatment. All are progressing favourably. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Alfred Shepherd, an officer on the Trevorian, who was injured during the loading of the vessel yesterday morning, when a case fell on him from a sling, died last night. One of his legs had been amputated. TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. During blasting operations yesterday afternoon at Egmont Box Company's mill at Te Rena, near Kakahi, a workman, Michael Hesketh, 05, went to sec why a second charge had not exploded. Just as he reached the spot where the charge had been put in an explosion occurred and Hesketh was blown about 30 feet. He was rendered unconscious, the skin on his face was scorched but no bones were broken. Hesketh received medical attention and was removed to the Taumarunui Hospital where he is making satisfactory progress. GISBORNE, Thursday. While liis two elder brothers were swimming in the river at ""Muriwai, James Desmond McCabe, aged four years, was playing on the bank, and must have fallen into the water. His brothers, aged 12 and 7 respectively missed him when they left the water, but thinking that he had gone back to the house they went away through the paddocks and played. After th::y had been playing for some time they began to wonder where their youug rh-othcr was. Eventually they saw his body caught in a snag in a creek. The body was secured but life was extinct.
