POOR WATER PRESSURE.

FIRE AT NGARUAWAHIA. COMPLAINT BY SUPERINTENDENT. A complaint against the poor water pressure at the recent destructive fire at Ngaruawahia was made by Mr W. Douglas, superintendent of the Fire Brigade, at the Borough Council meeting" last evening. When the hydrant was turned on, he stated, no water came for some time, and when it did come the pressure was very poor, and lumps of mud also came through the branch. Mr Douglas said that the main must have been badly choked, and he asked that the matter be looked into with a view of saving further trouble. Cr. Patcrson said the superintendent had informed him on the morning after the fire that a stone had been found in the nozzle of the hose, and may have impeded the flow of water. The turncock, Mr A. B. Dawson, in a written report, s:ud that the presence of dirt in the pipes might be explained by the fact that the fire plug was at the end of the four-inch main, where ;t reduced to one inch, and that there was no scour valve on the particular length in question The stone that was found in the nozzle may have bsen in the pipe when it was laid, as the cage over the eiiu of the pipe at Ihe intake was J-ineh mesh. Cr. Morris was authorised to make inquiries concerning the presence of the stone in the hydrant, and also to report on the condition of the hydrant and hoses. It was also decided to instruct the turncock to scour all fire plug valves.
