* —.. | WOOL SALES. PRICES FIRM IN LONDON. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, Jan. 18. The wool sales opened with prices firm at par to five per cent, advance. At the wool sales there was an excellent selection of greasy combing Mreinos and a fairly representative lot of scoureds. The bulk of the crossbreds were medium and lower sorts. There was a large attendance and good competition. Germany was the principal operator. Good greasy Merinos met with sUong Continental competition. Prices wree par to five per cent, above the December closing. Ordinary and average sorts and scour- > eds were unchanged. Crossbreds met pwifh strong Continental and Yorkshire V.\'cmand at par to 5 per cent, advance. MELBOURNE SALES. MELBOURNE, Jan. 19. Th\e wool sales continued with very keen competition. Best merinos advanced 1 7A per cent, on the December rates, while good merinos were from par to five per dearer.

Values generally were on a par with the opening day's rates. All wools showing line qnality met with extreme demand and continued to show a hardening tendency. Greasy Merino sold to ,32|d. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London house, dated 18th instant:—The sales opened with competition animated, and a large attendance. Tt&are was a good selection. Belgian, French and German buyers operated actively, the home trade buying any suitable lots. As compared with closing rates of iast scries, finer merino were Id higher; merino of other d&scrip'rions, par to Id higher; crossbred fine, par to 7d higher; crossbred medium and coarse, unchanged; slipc, unchanged; pieces, good demand from Continent. The new Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd., Hamilton, have received the following cablegram from their London House, trader date iSth inst.: —The\c was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and. Continental buyers being - active, and prices as compared with the close of the preceding series ruled . par to 5 per cent, higher for merino; in sellers' favour for greasy and scoured crossbred; better market for crossbred slipc. The opening catalogues were representative. WESTFIELD MARKETS. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., reports:— Beef was penned in average numbers, cow and heifer beef predominating. Ox beef was again very firm at late quotations, cow and heifer beef also selling at late quotations. Extra choice ox sold to 30s per 1001 b; choice and prime, 26s to 295; ordinary and plain, 23s to 255; prime young cow and heifer beef, 23s to 265; ordinary cow beef, 20s to 225; heavy prime steers, £ll 10s to £l2 10s; lighter prime, £lO to £ll 7s 6d; light, prime, £8 10s to £9 17s 6d; unfinished and small, £6 to £8 7s Gd; heavy prime young cows and heifers, £7 to £8; iighler, £5 10s to £6 17s Gd; light cows, £4 to £5 7s Gd. Sheep were yarded in average numbers, selling under steady competition at late quotations. Heavy prime wethers made £1 3s 3d to £1 5s Gd; medium prime, £1 Is 9d lo £1 3s; Igiht prime, £1 to £1 Is Gd; small and unfinished, 17s to 19s 9d; heavy prime ewes, 14s 6d to 16s Gd; medium prime, 13s to 14s 3d; light prime, Us 3d to 12s 9d; inferiorly fatted, 9s to lis. Lambs were penned in large numbers, prime lambs selling readily at late quotations. Store lambs penned in large numbers, sold under keen competition at late quotations. Heavy prime made £1 3s to £1 4s 9d; medium prime, £1 Is to £1 2s 9d; light prime, 19s to £1 0s 9d; unfinished, best, 15s to 18s 9d; others, 10s to 14s 9d. ,Pigs penned in less than average numbers met with keen competition and values improved on late quotations Choppers sold at £3 10s to £4 18s; heavy and medium baconers, £3 8s to £3 15s; light baconers and heavy porkers, £3 to £3 Gs; medium porkers and light porters, £2 15s to £2 18s- small and unfinished porkers, ti 10s'to £2 13s. Store pigs in average number sold at late quotations Large stores made £2 to £2 18s; slips £1 jOs to £1 16s; wcaners, 16s to ii <s. Calves were penned in less than average numbers and were dull of sale, values declining on late quotations. Runners made £2 10s to £3 15s; heavy vealers, £3 8s to £3 15s:; medium £3 to £3 Gs; light, £2 Ss to £2 18s smaller, £1 16s to £2 Gs; small and freshed dropped, 3s to £1 lis; rougn calves, Ss to 17s.
