CANBERRA RUSH.

■ ❖ BOOKING BEDS. OPENING CEREMONY. “So far as wc have been able to ascertain, every bed between, Goulburn and Cooma has been booked,” said the Federal Acting Minister for Defence (Mr Marr), speaking of arrangements for the opening of the new Federal capital at Canberra. The Minister said, however, that he resented statements, made by people who would have cared nothing about the arrangements if they had got invitations, accusing the committee of not having made all possible provision for the public to be represented. The amount of detail was enormous,* he said, and the committee had been working strenuously for two months past. Obviously only as many people could be present at the opening ceremony as the trains and roads would carry, and it had been found that the N.S.W. Railway Department would be unable to carry more than 2000 people to Canberra by rail on May 9. and 1000 on the following day. Sleeping accommodation on the trains could not be provided for even these. Parking space for 30,000 cars would be available. Special arrangements were being made for catering, but in respect of this, and of accommodation, private enterprise was being given the fullest encouragement to co-operate.
