CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.
ACTIVITY IN WELLINGTON. GOOD SEASONAL TRADE. (Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Christmas shopping never has been accepted by a Minister of Finance as an index to the .material welfare of the people. Nor do the shopkeepers themselves admit that their Christmas trade is largely affected by the price of money, by its scarcity or by Us plenitude. This year, however, those among them who give their confidence to the casual inquirer slate that the seasonal trade is good. It has begun earlier than usual and has steadily increased day by day. Usually the crowds arc biggest during the week embracing Christmas Day. This year they were large nearly a fortnight ahead and next week should bo making their records. Both parents and children again arc preferring a few solid presents that should last the twelve months round to the dozens of flimsy toys lhat were the playthings of a single week. German makers have not yet fully awakened to the changed taste of the. Now Zealand children, but the English firms have taken the hints of their customers are arc supplying useful durable articles to appreciative purchasers.
