FLOODS IN THE SOUTH
WESTPORT INUNDATED. MANY PEOPLE HOMELESS. WESTPORT, Saturday. The most disastrous flood in the history of Westport occurred yesterday. It was caused by the Butler River breaking bounds. The whole town is practically under water. Considerable damage, lias been done In every direction. Farmers are heavy losers of stock. Hundreds of citizens arc homeless temporarily, while many have lost all their belongings, through flood waters entering their homes. Fortunately there has been no Joss of life, although narrow escapes arc recorded. The public is urging the Government through Mr H. K. Holland, M.P., to make a substantial grant for the relief of sufferers, also requesting il to tend the marine engineer lo report on the damage done. Owing to a bad washout on the "railway it is probable the mines will Jo idle for a fortnight.
