DESTRUCTIVE FIRES.
FIRE ON SUGAR STEAMER. DAMAGE TO CARGO. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. The Su L \w Company’s Rona, on which a lire occurred on the voyage from Fiji, arrived here last night. The Rona left Suva at 3 p.m. on Thursday. At 8 p.m. the next day a fire was discovered .on the l'oro ’tween deck. When the fore hatch was lifted flames and smoke could be seen on the port side. Water was played on the lire, and an hour before daybreak it was under control. ... The members of the crew, with smoke helmets, then entered the hold with hoses, and finally the fire was subdued an hour and a half after the discovery. The outbreak occurred among a collection of cattle fillings and coal baskets. The origin is a mystery. Damage was done to part of the sugar cargo by water. The extent will not be known until an examination is made, The ship was not damaged. DRILL HALL DESTROYED. AMMUNITION AND RIFLES LOST. MARTON, Monday. The Drill Hall, a single-storey wooden building which was the scene of the Rangitikei early military activities and now used by the defence departemnt, was destroyed by fire yesterday morning. A quantity of ammunition and over 100 rifles were lost. The insurances are not ascertainable. HOMESTEAD AT ROTO ROA. A wooden house on Roto Roa Island was completely destroyed by fire shortly after 7 o’clock last evening. The house had recently been used as a dormitory for some half-dozen employees and was partly furnished. The building and its contents were insured in tlie Salvation Army Office, but the amounts were not available last evening. The cause of tlie fire is not known. CAR AND GARAGE BURNED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A garage and a flvc-scater car owned by Mr 11. A. Young, S.M., at Cashmere were destroyed by lire early Ibis morning. The garage was close to tlie house, which had a narrow escape, one corner of it being scorched. The motor was insured in the Queensland Office for 11200, and the garage in tlie Allance Office for £IOO. STAND ON FIRE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Immediately after The start of the first race at Riccarto'n the cry ‘‘fire” was heard by people in the outside enclosure. Smoke was seen coming from tli.e eastern end of No. 1 outside stand. A small army of amateur firemen set to work and leads were run out from a sump at the back of tlie stand, but it look tlie excited firelighters some time to settle down and direct the iiose to tlie proper place. The fire was extinguished without very much damage being done.
