GALA AT NAWTON.

SUCCESSFUL MEETING. FUNDS FOR SPORTS GROUND To provide funds fior a bowling green, tennis courts, croquet lawn and a children’s playground on an area of land given to the settlers by Messrs Watkins Bros., of Frankton, a gala and athletic sports were held on Saturday at Nawton. The area, which consists of about two acres, is the 5 per cent, of a property required to be allotted to the community when a block of land is sub-divided and offered for sale. The sports were held in a field at the hack of the Nawton Hall. The weather was dull and tiic field heavy and not in a good condition for athletics, while shortly before five o’clock rain began to fail. Various competitions were conducted in lhc hall and produce, and sweets and garments were offered for sale, while outside several side-shows provided additional amusement. In the evening a successful dance was held. During the afternoon the Hon. J. A. Young addressed the gathering and wished the committee, which had spent a lot of time preparing for the function, every success.
