NEW EMBANKMENT.

AND ANOTHER BRIDGE. LONDON COUNCIL PROJECT. If it be financially feasible, and the findings of the Royal Commission on Cross-river Traffic in London do not clash with the idea, London is to have another Embankment. For some time the London County Council has privately considered the possibility of transforming the south side of the Thames into a resemblance' of the north side by sweeping away the existing vista of factories and wharves lining the river from the New County Hall at Westminster to Blackfriars. Sir George Hume (chairman of the London County Council) said to a reporter— "We have often talked about the scheme as an ideal to be striven after, but we have not yet brought it to a stage of definite planning. "To replace the present stretch of wharves and oilier buildings with a fine wide terrace, a wide ,road, and dignified buildings along it is a very attractive proposal, but it would cost a very large amount of money "Unless we are going to raise the rales of London wc shall liavo lo go cautiously when considering improvements, however greatly they may be desired." He added that nothing could be done in the way of further improvements until Lambeth Bridge had been rebuilt and the fate of Waterloo Bridge settled. The scheme as at present envisaged provides also for an additional bridge to relieve the great pressure of crossriver traffic.
