CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

CAMBRIDGE MEETING. AFTER LAPSE OF TWELVE MONTHS After a lapse of 12 months, a fairly well-attended meeting of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday evening. Mr T. A Hicks occupied the chair, and stated that while he was pleased to see a fair number present he would like to sec twice as many. The function of the Chamber of Commerce was to deal witn matters outside the sphere of the Borough Council and other local bodies. Election of President. The secretary explained that owing to the lapse of 12 months since the last meeting they found themselves without a president. His Worship the Mayor, Mr T. F. Richards, wrote that owing to numerous other duties he wuold not be able to accept office foi a further term. It was unanimously resolved to ask Mr T. A. Hicks to act as chairman until the annual meeting in October. Mr Hicks, in consenting, said he would do his best to carry on during this short period. Trading at Home. A letter was received from Mr F. C. Beckett, advertising agent, setting forth a proposal to business men in the form of a booklet containing propaganda urging the necessity and the fairness of buying in our own town. The booklet could be financed by advertisements and would be no charge on the Chamber of Commerce. The onus would be on the local tradespeople to distribute the booklets to the people of the district. The chairman said the matter was worthy of consideration. He could not understand why people went ouL of their own town to spend ttieir money. Mr Edwards said he understood that the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce had gone in for the booklet, and lie thought it would be a good idea to ask them for a copy of same, also any other particulars there may be regarding the cost of advertisements, etc. It was Anally resolved to write the Whakatane Chamber asking for a copy of their booklet. Membership Caijipalgn. A good deal of discussion took place regarding the future prospects of carrying on. Mr Waghorne thought that the present attendance was not a fair criterian, as there were other attractions, also a good deal of sickness. The chairman advised a systematic canvass of the town for new' members.

After a good deal of discussion on ihc matter, it was resolved to send a circular letter lo all unAnancial members, asking them io pay their subscriptions before the annual meeting in October. It was also resolved that Messrs T. A. Ilicks and 11. B. Bishop be a committee to canvass the business people, and to arrange for holding the deferred annual meeting of 1925 at an early dale. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting. TOBACCO QUALITIES.
