"A RUNAWAY GIRL."

Sir,—As one of the large audience at (he Theatre Royal on Saturday night. I wondered how many of the people there realised the oommunity value of an organisation such as the Hamilton Operatic Society. a was very nice lo be entertained so pleasantly by talented people, but surely the success of the production and the enthusiasm engendered on both sides of the footlights had a wider significance. Here was a crowd of Hamilton's young people, who had spent weeks together in pleasant social intercourse and in developing (heir talent, entertaining a crowd of Hamilton people and arousing enthusiasm such as is rarely seen in a local theatre. Everybody seemed to know everybody else—and lo be glad that they knew them! Here were "ouown" proving their ability, and wo took a personal pride in thci.'* success. The effect of such a spirit of appreciation and goodwill can hardly be over-estimated; it extends in an ever-widening circle, and lias incalculable results. There are societies for moral uplift and organisations for the spreading of a better spi'U between employer and employee; but it is doubtful if these do half the good, directly and indirectly, lhat the Hamillon Operatic Society and kindred organisations do. The men and women who give, their time to the Society deserve thanks; they are. doing'a definite and valuable work for the community. May I, as one or Hie public, congratulate all concerned on the success of "A Runaway Girl." and express the hope lhat they will "carry on" —I am, etc. * "APPRECIATION." *
