WELLINGTON ZOO.
GIFT OF AN ELEPHANT. (Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Tlic Zoological Society has for a long time been trying to arrange for an elephant, and now there is a likely chance that their desire will be achiev"v ed. Negotiations are at present being carried on between the Society and the .Madras Government lor the delivery of one free of cost, and the Wellington City Council, after thanking the Society for its efforts, nas decided to defray the cost of carriage to New Zealand. The Mayor (Mr C. J. IS. Norwood) said that as the matter appeared to present no difficulties, the offer should be accepted. The elephant, he said would be a big draw, and would bring in quite, a lot of revenue. Cr. Semple recorded his vole against the elephant. A recommendation that the transport charges of £75 be guaranteed raised some objections, but it was felt that as the elephant was being obtained without cost i! would be a discourtesy to the Madras Government not to accept it. The Mayor said that the elephant offered was a female.
