PORTUGAL'S DICTATOR. SAYING COUNTRY FROM CHAOS. VISCOUNT HAIG'S ADVICE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.)[ f. (Received June 9, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, June S. The Daily Mail's Oporto correspondent has interviewed General -Manuel Gomez da Cosla, the Dictator, who commanded the Portuguese in wartime. He said he decided on proclaiming a Dictatorship after a year's deliberation, in which he saw utter chaos result from the unstable political parties. No man dared govern: it was everyone for himself, thus impoverishing and corrupting Portugal. Ho meant to attain his goal—the reform of the country—at all costs, and intended to model his Dictatorship' on the lines of Mussolini in Italy. *Ho would never forget Viscount Ilaig's words when he said good-bye in Flanders, adding: "Some day we may hear you doing something for 'Portugal within itself. I recommend you lo do it, as there seems sore need for help."
