BRITAIN'S FINANCE.
SIGNIFICANT STATEMENT. POSITION NOT IMPROVED FURTHER TAXATION POSSIBLE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, June 7. "The Chancellor's position lias not improved in consequence of the recent events in Britain," was Mr Winston Churchill's significant rejoinder in the House of Commons in the course of the committee stage of the Finance Bill when the House first discussed an Opposition amendment to reduce the tea duty. Mr Churchill added that he was more inclined to search in the near future for additional sources of taxation than to abandon any on which the Budget had been balanced. He denied the Labour charge that lhc Government intended to increase indirect taxation, and pointed out that luxury taxes were included in the total or indirect taxation and were raised almost exclusively from luxuries. The amendment was defeated by 241 votes lo 105.
