AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.

YORKSHIRE MATCH. VISITORS DISPOSED OF FOR 177. (neuter.) LONDON, June 5. Tlie Australian cricketers to-day commenced a match pgainst Yorkshire at Bradford. The home side comprised the following:—Lupton, Rhodes, Dolphin, Waddington, Lcylaud, Oldroyd, Robinson, Mitchell, Turner, Crawford, and Douglas. The weather was dull and the wicket was easy. Tlie attendance numbered 12,000. Collins won the toss and the Australians batted. The attack was commenced by Robinson and Waddington. The latter bowled leg breaks and had four fielders close around the batsmen, as Root had done at Birmingham, but Waddington had ncittier the guile nor the pace of Root. Nevertheless he had Bardsley cutting into the hands of slips and 'Turner brought off a lino catch at Hie second attempt. Andrews did not last long. He drove a no-ball from Waddington to tlie boundary and then sent the same bowler to the leg boundary, hut in the next over he mis-timed Robinson in seeking to turn him to leg. Slow Rate of Scoring.

With Collins in the game slowed down. The Australian captain was playing with his accustomed stolidity, hut complete confidence. Woodfull showed unusual hesitation and was several limes beaten by Waddington. lie had been at the wickets 55 minutes before lie obtained a boundary. Collins had then been batting half an hour for one.

The score mounted slowly by singles. Collins sent the first 50 up after 7 0 minutes' play with a fine leg glance to tlie boundary. In tlie next over Collins played Robinson to short leg and abandoning caution called for an impossible run. Woodfull was easily run out. The score was then 52 for three wickets.

Crawford, who has a reputation as a right-hand last howler, started at a medium pace anil kept a good length. Douglas in his first over took Ponsford’s wicket. The ball pitched wide and broke between the bat and Ponsford’s leg.

The dew which had boon hanging heavily on the pitch was drying. Crawford in his second over tempted Taylor out for the same stroke as Collins had missed. Tlie batsman attempted to edge to leg a ball which broke across and took bis off stump.

Gregory immediately opened out, utilising his long reach to the fullest extent. He off drove Douglas for two. two fours and a single. Ho and Richardson followed this up by scoring from five halls in Crawford’s next over. Botli batsmen went out to punch the bowling, the playing back to which nad proved so fatal to their predecessors. Gregory scored three from a cover shot and Richardson four from a leg stroke off no-balls from Waddingtm. They brought up the 100 after two hours’ play with singles off Crawford. Gregory was clean bowled in attempting a huge drive.

As tlie wicket dried Crawford increased his pace, which he varied admirably. lie sent down a fast one with a slight turn from the leg which uprooted Ryder’s middle stump. The total was Hicu 110 for 8.

Richardson continued to drive in front of the wicket. Grimmett in seeking to make a late cut off one from Waddington was caught at deep point. Richardson had made 17 when lie gave a difficult chance to Crawford at leg off Waddington. Otherwise his batting was safe. He limed well. Ellis had made 5 when ho gave an easy chance at the wicket off Crawford. In Rhodes’s first over Richardson sent him to leg for a six. Eliis was again inissed at the wicket. A succession of maiden overs followed. Ellis was playing Rhodes w.tli difficulty and Richardson was on the defensive against Crawford. Douglas replaced Rhodes and Ellis imincd'a'ely became aggeesshe, cutting him through cover to the boundary. When the score was 103 Ellis made a curious stroke, lie snicked one from Douglas off the inside of his hat into Waddington’s hands and the umpire decided tlie appeal in favour of Ellis. Waddington then clean howled Ellis, who with Richardson had made an invaluable stand for an hour. The innings concluded for 177 at tea time. Yorkshire at ibe Wickets Gregory and Ryder opened the Australians’ bowling. Collins replaced Ryder when the score was 7 to enable Gregory and Ryder to change ends. Leyland and Mi chell started well for Yorkshire. Leyland s.-oring with line shots on the leg side. Mitchei was uneasy against Ryder. Tlie balsinen were careful, getting occasional singles off Grimmett, who with Richardson took over the bowling. Leyland went out to drive one and was easily stumped, lie had been warned of the risk. Oldroyd and Mitchell took their time in playing themselves in. They awaited loose halls. Oldroyd then roused the crowd with magnificent drives for two and four off Grimmett. He then hit another four off Richardson. When stumps were drawn Yorkshire had made 05 for one wicket. Details of the scores arc:— AUSTRALIA. —First Innings.
