RURNT TO DEATH.
IN A BLAZING TENT. OLD MAN’S FATE.
Charles Everson (73), an old-age pensioner, met a tragic deatli in a blazing tent in the bush near Northmead, N.5.W.
Everson's tent was situated in some thick scrub about a hundred yards off a road. Several men were in a camp several hundred yards away, when they saw a glare, and heard cries for help. They ran to tlie camp, and saw the tent ablaze. Everson was inside, and they could sen him writhing in tlie ilamcs. Several attempts were made to get. him to safety, hut all were futile." The men tried to hook him out of the fire with long sticks, but the heat was so intense that they were driven back.
The flames set fire to the surrounding bush, which burned furiously, and eventually drove tlie rescue party away from the camp. The Parramatta poller were informed Of the tragedy at 9.30 p.m., and assistance was. sent out three miles lo Northmead.
It was nearly midnight before Everson's body, blackened and unrecognisable, was recovered from the ruins of the camp. ■ It is stated that Everson bad been accustomed to build a small lire inside the tent during the cold weather.
