WORKERS' HOMES.
QUEENSLAND SCHEMES, Queensland's Svorkers' housins . schemes arc stated to have favourably impressed the Minister for Local Government and chairman of the New South Wales Government, Housing Committee (Mr Fitzgerald), and Mr Alidis, M.L.A., secretary to the committee, who, accompanied by Mr Kelly, M.L.A., inspected houses built in Brishano under the provisions of the Queensland Workers' Homes Act and the State Advances Act. It was officially reported that the homes inspected, built 1 of weatherboard, were found in all cases to have every" convenience. The Government was building at the rale of 207 bouses a day,.and making available £1,000,000 yearly for this purpose. It was anticipated that during the next financial rear £2,000,000 would be made available. The monthly payment for a house, of which the capital cost was £ooo, amounted to 18s 3d weekly. Purchasers had to deposit only 5 per cent of the cost, and give security for the remainder by taking out a life insurance policy to cover the amount outstanding at any time during the currency of the contract for repayment (•25 years). Should the purchaser die at any time before the expiration of the period of contract for repayment, tho home became tho absolute property of the purchaser's dependents, without encumbrance of any kind. The monthy instalments made provision for repayment of principal and interest at 5 per cent., Are insurance life insurance, painting, repairs, general expenses, and rent of land. They were far below the amount that ordinarily would be paid in rental for such n home without the benefits mentioned.
