GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS.

Nothing is going better at Ellcrslie than Sir Roseberry and he will have some friends when he is saddled up to contest Hie Great Northerns. He has done a couple of good schooling tasks over Ihc hurdles on Hie outside, of Hie course proper recently and he accomplished his work well. Sir Roseberry will certainly take some heading off over Ihe concluding stages of the hurdle race and tils prospects for the second day alsn look bright. It would he a great feat for him to win the steeplechase three limes in successive years. Knighthood has been sent to the Wanganui meeting and ho should ho an improved horse after his racing at the Waikato meeting and his subsequent schooling work at Ellcrslie. He performed well In a bout with Sir Roseberry at Ellcrslie on Saturday morning and though the big horse was 100 good for him at ihc finish lie certainly impressed with his display. lie is in Ihc Kaitokc hurdles to-morrow with 9.G. Mount Marta was tried over hurdles in public at the Egmont meeting and won in most decisive fashion and his performance augurs well for the future in this department of the game. Mount Marta was very unlucky on Hie flat this season running into a place on several occasions. His next appearance will be at Wanganui to-morrow in the Kaitokc hurdles and lie will have some support. Merry singer lias been going well in his schooling work at Hawke’s Bay and it is quite on the cards that he will see a short price if started in Ihc Hack Steeplechase on Ihc first, day of ihe Wanganui meeting. Kendal, who won at Egmont, is also engaged, while Uncle Dave, who has been running prominently of late in these events, lias also been accepted for. Prince Rufus, who won the Confury Hurdle Race two seasons ago, is an acceptor in the race this week. PeUr Maxwell lias shown himself to lie a good jumper while lie has a good turn of pace on the flat, lie is engaged in Hie Wanganui Steeplechase and is sure lo give a good account of himself. . Sevang has come on well during the last few months winning five races in his last seven starts. He is a full brother to Loyal Irish and J. Buchanan has not unduly hurried him, with ihc result that he is getting well rewarded for his patience. Seraug will make his first appearance in open company at Wanganui this week and it will be interesting to see how he gels on. if the going is at all good lie will beat more than beat him. . Civility has 9.7 in the Borough Handicap at Wanganui and even with this impost iiic daughter of Elysian will be supported. Sh raced well at the recent Manawatu meeting and usually performs prominently at Wanganui, which, some seasons aso, used lo he her home course. Kendal won in good style at Egmont and I)is performance was all the more impressive wheq one considers that it was his first public appearance as n ’chaser. He did not jump too well on occasions, but lie lias pace and made up for his careful jumping by ilis speed on Hie flat. He was tried among Ihe more prominent steeplechasers on Ihc second day but lost Ids rider early. He should pay ids way in Ibis department of Hie game this winter.

J.e Choueas has been unlucky this season. He lias won one race and been placed second on live occasions and third once. Le Choueas lias some pace and at Wanganui may do better. A Christchurch writer upon Hie light harness sport states that Nelson Derby is a picture of good health. He is not being required to do any serious tasks. He will be a great horse next season. According to the Sydney Referee, G, Voting is to ride the 5500 guineas colt, brother to Valicare, next season. Young lias been engaged to do the riding for Mr E. M. Pearce, owner of Hie youngster named. General Carrington is back at H. S. Green's training establishment at Hastings. Last season he made 21 efforts to secure winning credentials, and won five events, got second on Ine same number of occasions, and was third twice. Passin’ Through showed on the first day at Egmont that lie was coming back to form and it was not surprising to sec him win on Saturday. He, however, appears to have been a bit lucky, for if Puwliero had not hit Hie last fence lie would have given Passin’ Through a much harder task to beat him. Tuki lias been nominated for steeplechase events at Dunedin, while lie is also engaged at I tie Ellcrslie winter meeting. Both fixtures arc run practically at Hie same lime, but it would not.be surprising to sec; him kepi at Ellcrslie. Koauau lias performed well over hurdles Ibis season, and lie is engaged in Ilio Century Hurdle Race and the Kaitoke Hurdles at Hie Wanganui meeting, in Hie former he lias 10. S, while in Hie kilter lie lias llie stiff impost of 12.9. It is hard to say which event lie will lake on, but the Century Hurdle Race, at I lie weights, looks the belter proposition. Brushwood Boy has been schooled over hurdles at Ellcrslie, and is to make bis first public appearance over Hie battens at Wanganui Ibis week. He went south with Sevang on Sunday nigh I, bill be will have lo jump a great deal faster than he did at Ellcrslie lo have a show. Brushwood Boy is a full brother to Eerie, who has turned out a great jumper, so 'hat with experience lie' may do well. Landlord won the Wanganui Steeplechase last year, and then went amiss, lie was recently started over hurdles al Hie Hawke's Bay fixture, and ran third with a good impost. If at his best Landlord will take some healing to-morrow at Wanganui, for be is a good jumper. Master Peter, who lost /;omc gear pi ;!],■ Kginont Steeplechase, is stated l.i have given a very poor display. He w;,s sccuiiil ill the last Wanganui Steeplechase, and may perform as well, if not heller, in the same event to-morrow. Nnkumai is engaged in both llie principal jumping events at Wanganui to-morrow, and, after iiis display at Egmont, where be won the big steeples easily, lie will be in demand if be si;irts in Inn Steeplechase. 11l Hie Kiii-dli' Knee lie has also a good show with ff.ls.

Lucius is among those engaged in hurdle events at Wanganui. San Fera is coining on, and looks as though lie will Win good races before iong. There is no doubt about his ability to jump.

Shining Armour finished second on each day of the Egmonl meeting, and lie appears to be favourably treated in ihe Connolly Handicap at Wanganui to-morrow with 7.3. This is his home course, for lie is one or F. Tilley’s team, and lie will he one of the principal selections for the race. Uralla has been showing up in her engagements in Hie south, and it looks as though this mare may pick up a stake before she returns. A mile and a quarter seems just a trifle beyond her at present, but she may run on all right in Hie. Connolly Handicap. At a mile she is above Hie average.

Euphonium, who is now one, of 0. Cox’s team, was hampered by the going on Hie first day of Hie Egmont meeting, but if Hie course is at all firm at Wanganui lie should be one of Hie hardest to beat. ■ Benzora ran two good races at Trcnlham and also performed well at Feilding previous to that. At Egmont he finished second on Ihe first day, and won on Saturday. He is engaged at Wanganui this week. 'Parlet on lias been a disappointment for a long time past, and lie. added another second to his list of placings f,L Hie North Canterbury meeting on Saturday. He is reported to have been disposed of for 300 guineas at this fixture. Zircon jumped very badly in the Tongahoe Hurdles at Egmont. lichad schooled well at Ellcrslie and his public display came as a surprise. He will need lo improve a good deal to be a success in bis new sphere. Eden Hall is spoken of in Taranak 1 ’ as one of the most promising young horses in those parts. He has shown a steady improvement during the autumn, and is now in the first flight of hacks with considerable prospects of doing well when he lias lo compete in open country.

The jockey, W. Cotton, brother to D. Colton, who lias been associated with R. Emerson’s stable for a considerable period, underwent a serious operation to his leg in the Christchurch Hospital recently. There is a possibility that lie may never he able io walk without the assistance of a stick.

Don Fisher, formerly trained at Trcnlham by W. Young, lias been acquired by Messrs Clarkson and Pearson, and lie has gone into J. R. Pearson’s stable at Ricearton. He is a fivc-ycar-old gelding by Guianforlu from Dolly Fisher, and lie started five limes last season without being in a place in any of his engagements.

It is reported from RiecarLon as almost certain that F. D. Jones will take Zaragoza lo Ellcrslie for the winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. According to information published in Hastings, Comical came to grief while galloping round the other day, getting foul of a fence, and sustaining minor injuries which may keep him olf the tracks for the remainder of Ihe winter. This will lie a pity, for at his best Comical is one of our best hurdlers and was already fairly well forward. '"Mr Cecil Ilazlelt .is the nfcw owner of the hurdler Toa Taua, who recently arrived in Dunedin from Hawke's Bay. The Bczonian or Aulunmus — Countermine marc, Deep Drive, got entangled in a fence during the recent Hoods on the West Coast and was drowned. She was a useful mare on the West Coast circuits, and was a good stake winner for her stable. Deluge seems lo be pleasing in his work at Wanganui. When properly right lie is a good horse, and he may be found to he at his best at the Wanganui meeting this week. The Solfcrino gelding Los Ambus has been sold and is destined to do his future racing in Western Australia. Louglircu is a possible recruit lo Hie hurdling game this winter. Reports from the south credit him willi doing good work. Such a well-per-formed fiat racer should he useful over fences if lie lakes kindly to jumping. Bonny Kill was a fairly good performer over hurdles last season, while Ibis season she won Ihe Richmond Steeplechase, two miles and a quarter, at ih« Wellington Fleet meeting, carrying 9.9. She is engaged ill the Hack Steeplechase at Wanganui. R. J. Mason contemplates leaving early next month on his customary trip to Sydney. He will have no old horses on this occasion, but lie may lake a couple of yearlings, the Limond —Walcrwings colt, and the Absurd — Eulogy filly, purchased at 0. M. Currie’s sale in February. f The two youngsters have been kept busy during the last few weeks, and if they continue lo go on the right way they will be candidates for the big spring two year old races at Randwick. Calcite was very sore after her race at the Ambcrlcy meeting, and F. D. Jones has turned her out lor a spell. The imported mare may not be raced again until well on in next season. The Waliine from Wellington recently look a valuable shipment of horses, hound for Hie Eldcrslio Stud, North Otago. It comprised eight brood mares in foal lo Tea Tray and live yearlings by Tea Tray. (limy arc part of Hie recent purcliasu made by Mr I. G. Duncan in Auckland, aL the time lie secured the successful imported stallion Tea Tray. Captain J. Gage Williams, who judges for the Wellington Racing Club, Wellington Trolling Club. Maslcrlon Racing Club, Carterton Racing Club, and Manawatu Racing Club, is resigning ids positions willi tbe exceplion of the Wellington Racing Club, whose winter Hireling in July will also probably lie liis lasi Ca plain Williams may lie leaving New Zealand before Ihe end of next racing season, but in the event of bis remaining in the counIry lie intends to lake up duties which will interfere with liis position as judge to Ihc clubs which have engaged him. It is understood (says Carbine of Hie N.Z. Times), that 11. McSweency will appeal 'against the disqualification imposed on him by Hie stewards of Hie Eginont Racing Club. McSweency is one of Ihe best known cross-coun-try and hurdle riders in New Zealand, and lias ridden jumpers from tlm Riddiford stable for years, lie lias won a number of Hie most important crosscountry events, including two Grand Nationals, two Wellington slcople,'liases, and Iwo Wanganui steeplechases. On Hie retirement of T. huinlivan recently from training, Hie jumpers Dubious and Master Deter wont into McSweeney's hands, so Hint lii> was both their rider and their trainer. II is laid luck for him to strike (rouble so soon after ,-elling liis opportunity, and it is imfoctmial.e also for him as a steeplechase rider to lose his ticket at Ihe very beginning of Hie portion of Ihe season on which his living rhit’lly depends. McSvveeney is a resident of Trcnlham. | There is some spceulalion as lo I wholher iliis latest turn of events will j altogether dishearten Mr Itiildiford ; and result in liis retirement from Hie turf. Luck seems lo have been against him for some lime. Rcceivlly lie lost I lie services of Diiinlivan. whose successor, MeSweeney, is now in I rouble. Charlatan did not shape 100 well al

Egmont, and according to reports from Wanganui lie lias not impressed- with liis display since liis .arrival there.

Bailymoy it was among those sent from Ellcrslie for Ihe Wanganui meeting. This filly has a great deal of speed and recently won well at Wellington and she will have, some friends in hep engagements in Hie south.

Tigcriand, previously regarded as a great jumper, cut up very badly in a schooling gallop al lliccarloii recently, refusing at a (light of hurdles and a brush fence. Later lie was got over two ilights of hurdles. Says Ihe Southland Times: —Penury Rose broke down badly while doing a working gallop on ihc Southland Racing Club’s track last week. The I rouble was in the off hind leg, which has caused his trainer considerable anxiety for a long time, and the ligament has now given way, with Hie result that the 11 year old son of Penury is now a very had case. It was a severe blow to the owner, Mr A. 11. King, and trainer, J. A. Rowland, who lias had more Ilian his share of misfortunes of late, to lose the services of Penury Rose al this time of the season, for without doubt lie was, when well, one of Hie best proposilions for winter racing in Ibis country. Last year be brought fame to his trainer and owner, and incidentally Iliis province, by winning Hie Grand National Hurdle Race, and proved iiis right lo rank as one of Hie’ best hurdlers in commission in a season Unit was well supplied with good jumpers. Even last season his leg was troublesome, and his trainer spent many an anxious day prior lo the Grand National Hurdles in which the game old horse went out heavily bandaged.
