GLEN AFTON STRIKE
MINE TO BE SEALED. As there seemed no immediate prospect of settlement of the strike of MOO men at the Glen Afton collieries Ihe management has been busy in removing llic electric motors lo the surface in preparation for sealing the mine entrances. Mr C. M. Rich-While, one of the directors of the company, returned last night from a two-days' visit to Ihe mine. He staled that the men were. advised yesterday lhal Ihe colliery would be open until noon to-day, in order lhal lliey might have an opportunity to brins: llieir tools lo Ihe surface, and lhal Ihe entrance tunnels to the mine would be sealed Ibis afternoon. Jn preparation for Ibis move, and lo save llic machinery from deterioration due lo damp, all the electric motors had been brought to the surface.
Mr Rich-While said the sealing 01 the colliery would have the effect of saving the company considerable expense in daily inspection and ventilation, After the men decided to return to work, however, il would, take several days to reinstall the motors and ventilate the mine. Meanwhile, the company had confirmed its previous decision that the men must first return to work before further negotiations could be considered. In connection with a statement to the effect that the stocks of coal at the company's factories will be exhausted in a week, it is learned that particulars now received regarding these slocji3 show that each factory has, on the average, eight weeks' supply. A meeting of the men will be held al llunlly to-day.
