*Four letters wore received from the Municipal Band secretary: (1), asKing that Mr A. A. Garland, Leamington, be appointed to inspect the. band instruments; (2) requesting that the, Council, grant a subsidy of £IOO seeing that the band intended 1,0 compete at, the next contest; (3) asking for a heater to be installed at the band room; (i), expressing appreciation of Cr. Glanville's services as a member of the band committee.

Cr. Glanvillc presented the annual report and balance sheet for the band, stating that the general account was in credit to the amount of £75 10s 6d. while in the No. 2 account (carnival fund) .there was £27 19s 8d to credit..

Cr. Glanvillc said the band had placed £so' of its earnings to a replacement fund. The band was now an asset to the borough, and the personnel of the band could not be better. The chairman of the committee (Mr. W. White), was a good business manager. The speaker supported all Ihe requests of the band, and trusted that the grant for next year be increased to £IOO. The money would not be called on if not absolutely required. The Mayor complimeuted the band on the improvement of its finances, and also on its progress in efficiency Personally, said the Mayor, he doubted whether the band was wise in putting money to reserve fund at present; it was premature, especially seeing that the band would soon require a bandroom.

The Council agreed to Mr Garland's appointment as suggested, and requested the Engineer to report re putting a heater in tho band room, the matter of subsidy to be left over till the estimates wore concluded. The band report and balance sheet were adopted, the Mayor expressing pleasure at the explicit statement given.

The Town Clerk reported that be had received the resignation of T. Kelly as a councillor. The Cambridge Rugby Union asked for improvement to a muddy portion at Victoria Square; also that' the Dick Street entrance be used and an entrance be provided from Queen Street. The Council instructed its Engineer to effect the improvements to the ground, but declined to make the alterations re entrances as requested.

Balance Sheet. Tho balance-sheet for the year 192-i-25 was received from the audi-tor-general, duly audited and it was decided to have copies of same printed. The Council considered the matter of kerbsidc petrol pumps, and it was resolved to charge an annual rental of five guineas for each such pump. Te Miro Quarry. The Te Miro Quarry Reserve Committee reported that it had resolved to accede to the Cambridge Road Board's request for the withdrawal of the council's application for control of the Te Miro Quarry reserve, provided that the Council be reimbursed the amount already expended on that reserve. Considerable discussion ensued re the position of the Council with regard to the quarry. It was ultimately resolved to write to tho Minister for Public Works to ascertain in what body the quarry reserve was vested, and requesting that, seeing that the council had expended a considerable sum of money in testing the quarry, it should be reimbursed.

It transpired'during the discussion that a considerable quantity of gelignite, tools, etc., had been left by workmen in a tunnel at the quarry; owing to a subsidence of earth these had been lost. An attempt had been made lo recover these, but it had been rather dangerous, and the Council had not been successful. Cr. Wells was strongly, of opinion that the person supervising the work was responsible to tho council for this loss. Expenditure in Advertising. In reply to enquiry by the council the Te Aroha Borough Council stated that it iiad not expended money on advertising the town; this had been done by the Chamber of Commerce. The Rotorua Borough Council had authority by special Act of Parliament to expend money on advertising. The Mayor stated that the Council had entered into a contract for advertising Cambridge, and now the Audi-tor-General said the cost of same could not be paid except out of unauthorised expenditure. He moved that the contract entered into, be cancelled for Ihe reason above slated. This was carried. Water Supply. The meeting adopted a report of the Water Supply Committee, instructing Ihe town clerk lo call for tenders for the erection of Die reservoir, and instructing Ihe town clerk and Ihe engineer to prepare a contract for pipes and lilllngs. The Mayor reported that the contractors were taking steps In push on wilh the work, and had cabled for the pipes, which were to bo shipped in three lols, the last of which would arrive in August. After a lengthy discussion, in which all present expressed strong disapprovals! the delay in carrying out the necessary work, Cr. Wells move.- lo the effect that the council, acting under advice of their engineer, had taken steps to secure the necessary money for the water works by the beginning ! oi November. However, delay had j occurred, and the council had not been able to call for tenders, consequently j it had lost about £4OO in interest. The | council would consider the deduction j of this amount from commission to be paid to the engineer. All application from the Cambridge : District High School Committee for a reduction in Ihe renlal of the Town Hall for a school function was refused, it being pointed out t tin I. in future any i such reduction would he treated as a j donation by the council, and charged to unauthorised expenditure,
