STEAMER DECLARED "BLACK." RETAINING WORK FOR AUSTRALIA. TO SAFEGUARD SEAMEN'S LIVES. (United Press Association.) (Received March 18, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY. March IP. The steamer Clan MacNaughton, which drifted on the Middle Bank when leaving the Tamar River (Tasmania! last month, sustaining very serious injury, has been declared "black" by the Iron Trade Council. The secretary to the Council, Mr O'llanlon, slates the action follows a previous decision that no temporary repairs will be effected by workmen who are members of the union to any vessel. The, Council is opposed to Australian workmen patching up any vessel so that they can be taken to Continental ports for repairs, because of the danger to the lives of the seamen taking Ihem abroad, and because Australian workmen are being deprived of work which could be done here. They required an assurance from the company that the full repairs, which are said to involve £BO,OOO, will be made in Australia.
