GORDONTON.
Bonefit for Nula Hopa. A dance of much interest was held in the Oordonton Hall on Wednesday. March in, the proceeds of which went lo help defray Ihe legal expenses recently incurred by the young Maori hoy, Nuia Hopa, in connection with Hie assault ease of which he was Proved innocent. The youth had been called on to pay £3l 14s. The Maoris of ttie pah very generously provided £2O, and Ihe pakehas decided to show their sympathy by helping to pay the debt. Messrs Clark and Parfltt, as hosts, arranged a most enjoyable dance. The sum of £l3'was taken at the door. There were no expenses, as Ihe hall committee gave the hall free of charge and the women of the district provided a tasly and plentiful supper. Mesdames Riddel 1. Carswell. and Hell assisted the Maoris' orchestra with extras, pleasing all dancers. Poi dances, and musical and vocal items contributed by the Maoris were received with much applause. Mr l'arfltt explained the object of the evening, saying that after the £ll I is had been paid over the remaining sum would be given to Nuia's mother.
