BANDITS IN NEW YORK.

THIEVES' BIG HAUL. JEWELLERS DEMAND PROTECTION INCREASED INSURANCE RATES (Australian and N.Z. Gable Assn.) Received 0.5 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 14.

While the Metropolitan Jewellers' Association announced that the plate and retail jewellery stores would close one day as a protest against the inadequate police protection and to lodge a demand for increasing the force by 25,000 men one of the most sensational diamond burglaries occurred at the busiest street corner in the city, five armed men robbing a jeweller and escaping with 100,000 dollars in gems.

The unending increase in banditry has resulted in an anouncement by the National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters of an increase by 15 per cent of ihe rates on burglary insurance on residences and hotels, bringing the figures In some instances to nearly four cents' on the dollar. It is pointed out that even with the increased rates brokers have found It difficult to place risks since the companies are accepting- only a limited number. Innsurance men say that little of the loot is being recovered because the thieves arc disposing of the goods through "fences" arid not pawn shop*.
