A BAD THING GETTING BETTER.

Even the terrible Devil's Island, the French penal settlement off French Guiana in the American tropics, has caught the infection of" prison reform. Solitary confinement, which drives many men mad, has now been abolished, and the well-behaved may talk to each other during work.

Good conduct, too, will earn prisoners the opportunity to till <i piece of land, and even to earn wages and save money with which to set up for themselves, when their release comes.
