Chums at the Zoo

Of all the bears at the Zoo the biggest favourites are the Polar bears. They sit on their haunches and beg the visitors to throw 'them buns. This is great fun. We tried ii, and when I threw one over, one of them caught it in its mouth quite cleverly. Of course, there are other kinds of tears. There is the grisly bear — said to be very fond of hugging people. Wouldn't he enjoy himself playing" Postman's Knock" at a party? The Malayan Sun Bear is the sort that used to be brought round the streets in some of our cities, and dance to amuse the crowds. ' I've heard it said that bears won't touch " dead meat," and here is a funny story. One of these performing bears one day broke from its k ee per. it Wandered down a side street and was met by a butcher's boy with a tray of meat! Instantly he thought of the trick of shamming dead. Up came the bear, who sniffed the boy all over, and then calmly gobbled; up the nice piece of sirloin on the tray. Which just shows that you can't believe all you hear. As We reached the last of the bear pits a keeper passed us with a bag of fish. "By fovel it's feeding time," said Golly. " Let's follow himl" So we did. (To be Continued.) i
