MORRINSVILLE NOTES.

A. & P. Society. The executive of the Morrinsville A. and P. Society at the last meeting decided to hold a "working bee" on February 10, to put the pens in order and generally tidy-up things in preparation for the annual Show. A subcommittee' was appointed to inspect the grounds and make preliminary preparations for carrying out the work. ■ - The Roads. Travellers to Morrinsville, and those passing through from Hamilton to Te Aroha will be glad to. hear that the spell of line weather this week has enabled the Borough Council lo complete the main road right through the Borough, Ihc work in Which was so long delayed . by the heavy rains experienced earlier in the month. A large amount of extra work had to be done on the road to put it into shape again after each soaking it got nearly every day for a fortnight, but probably the extra rolling and extra metal will make the road more permanent and be some compensation for the heavy extra cost. Small Bird Nuisance. ..

The few grain crops grown in the Morrinsville district have suffered very severely this season from the thousands of sparrows which have been feeding on them since they began toripen. In some cases, small fields of wheat have been so badly infested by small birds from early morning until dark that by the time they were cut fully one-half the grain had been taken by the birds. , For., many years, in grain growing districts in the South, County Councils have recognised the seriousness of the-loss caused by small birds, and have been paying a fair price for eggs and heads. Jn this way the pest has been kept kept somewhat in check. At present grain growing is not a large item in farming operations in the Waikato, but there is no doubt the small birds every year are on the increase, and are doing considerable damage to crops and causing heavy loss, as they lake a big toll of all seed sown. The sooner steps are taken to check their increase the better. County Councils might well follow the example set in the South and -take some steps to deal with the pest.
