PERSONAL.

Mr H. C. Haywood is gazetted ranger for the Rotorua Acclimatisation District. Mr W. S. Carter has been re-elected chairman of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board for the ensuing year. Mr F. A. Snell has returned to Hamilton after five weeks" holiday at Waihi Beach. Mr P. W. Maddock is visiting Hamilton. He will return to Wellington to-morrow night. Lord Suffolk, who has been visiting New Zealand, was a passenger by the liimaroa from Auckland for Sydney. Mr R. G. Ellis, M.P. for Wakefield, England, went through Hamilton yesterday from Rotorua for Auckland. Mr. M. C. Gudex returned on Thursday night from Canterbury and Otago where he had been spending his vacation.

Mr C. Cuming, o'f the Waikato Times literary staff, left last night on a holiday trip, to the New Zealand Exhibition at Dunedin.

Dr. C. A. Taylor, until just recently senior house surgeon at the Auckland Dospital, left on Thursday for Wellington, where he will join the Matatua for London. He intends to take a postgraduate course at Home. The Hon. W. Pember Reeves, who has been in Wellington for a week, after visiting the South Island, will pioceed in a few. days to Auckland. He will return to Wellington to spend the month of March there before proceeding back to England in April.

Mr W. Jess, M.A., assistant mathematics master at Scots College, Wellington, has accepted the appointment of organising teacher in Western Samoa, where educational matters are receiving the close attention of the Administrator-General (General Sir George Richardson). Mr Jess was formerly a pupil of the Hamilton High School.

Sir Robert Stout's appointment as Chief Justice of New Zealand wdl end ou January 31, and his retirement wdl be recognised by the Bar of New Zealand who will tender him a lormal L.rewell on Monday morning. It is expected that the other Justices will be present, and the senior Judge (Mr Justice Reed) will preside. The Attorney-General (Hon. Dowme Stewart) will speak on behalf of the Bar, and it is expected that there will be a very large attendance' of Wellington practitioners.
