STORM IN ATLANTIC.
BRITISH STEAMER LOST.
TWENTY-FIVE MEN PERISH. i THE LINER OLYMPIC SAFE. NEW YORK, January 28 Rumours were in circulation in New Ttork last night that the White Sta? liaer Olympic was in distress. Howevcr' M 7 r , P - A - s - franklin, president ol the International Marine, declares that the reports arc nonsense. The vessel had only left Southampton yesterday, and had not had time to clear the English Channel.
, A report from Columbus, Indiana, says an S.O.S. call, which was believed to have come from the Olympic, was received over a radio there.
Naval. authorities at Washington have not received any radio distress call from the liner. At Boston the steamer Scythia reported early this morning that she had heard no distress calls from the Olympic. • A message from Halifax states that a wireless message received there today from the German liner Bremen indicates that the British 4000-ton steamer Laristan,'which was in distress off that port, has gone to pieces. Her crew of 25 men were drowned. For two days the Laristan had battled against wind and snow in the North Atlantic.
The Bremen, which had been standing by since she rescued six men oh Tuesday, has now abandoned the search for other survivors. A wireless message received in New York from the American liner President Roosevelt states that four lifeboats were lost to-day in attempts to rescue the crew of the crippled British steamer Antinoe in mid-ocean.
