CRICKET.

THE HEATHCOTE SHIELD. RETAINED BY GRAMMAR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday.

The Auckland Grammar School eleven successfully staved off the challenge of the Christchurch Boys' High School team for the Heathcote Williams Shield when they defeated the visitors by 85 runs yesterday.

When play was resumed yesterday morning Grammar, with a first innings lead of 51, had 38 runs on for the loss of two wickets in their second innings. The wicket was still perfect and entirely in favour of batting, but, with the exception of Matheson, who scored 39 by good cricket, the batsmen adopted defensive tactics, and were dismissed for the small score of 122. Cliristchurch commenced their secend innings requiring 174 for .victory. They batted ste'adily, but infused little life into their innings, with the result that Matheson and Kasper disposed of Ihem for 88 runs. Merritt, who made a very favourable impression as a slow break bowler, showed that he is also a fine batsman, for his display was easily the best of the match. He attacked the bowling well and compiled 43, scoring freely all round the wicket. Innes batted patiently and was a long time at the crease to make 12. His innings was very valuable.
