SPORTING.

TAKAPUNA- JOCKEY CLUB, .THE SUMMER:MEETING. ; FIELDS FOR THE FJRHP ;DAY, The Takapuna Jockey Club wili commence its two days' racing at the club's Auckland suburban course tomorrow. As the occasion Is a clos.-j holiday in the province, patronage of the extensive order can be anticipated under favourable weather conditions. Waikato followers, of the sport premise to bo present in extensive numbers. The fields for-the various races : tomorrow are, on;the whole of good'size and the interestfrom this "'area" in the gathering will be t added to by the fact that many horses from South Auckland stables are to fulfil their engagements, TRIAL HANDICAP, Of £250; 7 furlongs.

::. There is nothing of outstanding promise in this field so that stable information will be the substitute for public form when the fancied ones are being financially placed in the leading positions. Maveelish and Aurumavis towards the top of;the handicap, and Luxurious and Appellant among those lower down may not be neglected..

ZEALANDIA HANDICAP, Of £275; 7 furlongs.

The material in this event includes "several with useful form over the distance. Joy Ride was beaten by Daylight over seven furlongs on the same ooursc a fortnight ago but the altered weights of the pair to-morrow may enable the former to have /revenge. This pair may not have everything .made for them either as the Prince Abbey—Alfort bracket will not be neglected and Pinon's form has been encouraging.

lIAURAKI HURDLES, ■jf;' Or, £275;,1J miles..

The hack hurdler^-will.contest their - event,-over"-one mile and a half. The top-weight defeated a useful performer 'in' Prince Rufui dn.;the, same circuit Vat the" Thames meeting, which is form that was encouraging. Bustler's most danger may come from Some Fashion, -•while if' either of this pair are to be /supplanted .Bright Light may be equal to the task if found in the mood, which is not always the case, with liinv ~ ; dDpr"*':"" ""'■' Of £1400; 1$ miles.

Such a good stake as. is attached to this event makes the effort well.worth while. The top weight has comi back refreshed after a short let up 'following 'his Auckland Cup effort—not an enthralling one by the way. Still Musketoon is a quality horse when right. He Was third in this event twelve months ago with lOlbs less than he will carry.to-morrow. . If he is made to carry ;his weight all the way he may have enough, of it by. ; the time the finishing pbsMooms up. Ruapapa ran unplaced in this race last season with the same impost as he will have on the coming occasion. The fact that the field,is.not so good this time and that Buapapa has not been overdone at racing this season may he argued in his favour. On past showings, however, twelve furlongs appears to be slightly beyond the qualifications of the Polydamon chestnut, though he won the Alison Cup in a style to encourage the belief .that h,e wQuld have, got the cxta furlong and a Half'that day. Town Bank: has not produced the form this season that the Archiestown gelding was capable of fast, but a halt in his preparation has kept hirn away from racing duty as extensively as would otherwise have been the case. In the Clifford Plate at Ellerslie this month he was hitting out well over a mile and a half journey. On the matter of distance there will .he many to query Town Bank's ability to b 3 prominent when the issue "is being decided on Friday.' Transformer is a ne\y, r comer to big handicaps but his second to Tc Mouanui in the. A.R.C. handicap at Ellerslie was good. Spoony is another of thelightweights who;has gof'the distance successfully in th 3 past and of. those lower down Desert Glow's claims rcM/the best. - -Transformer, Spoony and Musketoon may carry the public confidence.

FERRY HANDICAP,' Of £300; 9 furlongs. st. lb. 1..'. st.'Hi.

The field in the nine furlong Hack Handicap is by no means strong, Brushwood Boy will probably have the widest call and other likely candidates are Curraghmorc and Hokioi. CALLIOPE HANDICAP. Of £500; 5 furlongs.

Eileena 7 0 Phaola and Value have not appeared in public since the' spring but 3 as both have shown form they must be regarded as probabilities. The last named, however, seems the better treated of the two. Tea Bell has already won twice over the same course, while Baby Bun and Atapai raced prominently at the Thames meting. Value Tea Bell and Baby Bun should certainly be among those sought after.

OREWA HURDLES, Of £300; l'-i miles.

Kawa lias previously, shfrwn a dislike for the left-handed Takapuna course and despite ht 3 good form at Ellendie otters may he preferred to him. Black Crafeer-is an Improving sort who won

a fair race at Ellerslie while Archibald won the hack hurdles on the second day of the spring meeting. Preference may be given to Archibald and Black: Cruiser.

STEWARDS' HANDICAP, Of £550; about 6 furlongs

The short course will suit Finelli, who, if she draws an inside position, will take a lot of catching. Heisler is another speed merchant who should be well suited by the course. -King Merv, after his Auckland running is doubtful, but York Abbey may be all the ".better for his'- outings at Christmas. The course might not suit Cawnpore, but leaving out that aspect of the matter his Wellington form is too good to ignore. Ring the Bell, if reserved, will beat more than will beat him. To sum up, Cawnpore, Fineffi and Heisler are a trio which should be among those in request.

THE PAHIATUA [MEETING. IB> Telegraphs—Press Association > PAHIATUA, Wednesday. Following are the", concluding results: — ' PAHIATUA HANDICAP. —1£ miles. TARANAKI MEETING. •■•'• SOME GOOD FIELDS. ■ Excellent entries have, been received for the Taranaki Jockey Club's autuma meeting, which takes place at New Plymouth on Tuesday and Saturday, February 11 and 13 respectively. Numerically the nominations. show an increase of thirteen, on last year, constituting a record for the club. The quality of the- horses is particularly pleasing. The fields include several horses from Waikato and Auckland stables.

Cocbanut, Wenday, Curraghmbre,;••; Bright Day, Bright Knight, Ring the- Bell, : Daylight, Athenry, Bevis, and Baby Bun.'NOTES FROM THE TRACKS. ,''.''.': ''"'. : (By '"Martian.") ... Acceptances for- Wednesday's racing at the, Egmont Club's meeting will close at 8 o'clock.to-morrow evening. Roy Reed will be riding at, Takapuna, where one of his mounts will be Finelli in the Stewards' Handicap to-morrow. Aurumavis,.a double winner at the Bay of Islands meeting, has/been rehandicapped to 8.10 in the Trial Handicap at Takapuna to-morrow. - If e! George takes his team to Sydney for the autumn meetings J. Barry will go over to do the riding. )' The' connections . of Royal Present were anxious to secure C. Eastwood to ride their horse in the Takapuna Cup, but the Riccarlon apprentice will not be at the meeting. It is staled that the last has not yet been heard of what may be termed the West Coast hurdle race (when five jockeys were disqualified). An endeavour is now being made to locate the outsiders who were associated with the jockeys. , Loyal Irish appears to be striding out all right in his work at Ellerslie, and yesterday morning easily beat Charlady over six furlongs on No. 1 grass track. W. 11. Jones will have the following mounts at the Takapuna meeting:— Luxurious, Dan Quin, Transformer, Merry Ann, Baby Bun, arid Nancy Lee.

The Te Awarnutu-lraincd Rahcpoto appeared to be winning the concluding event easily at Pahiatua yesterday. when Tawhei came with a late run and dead-headed with Rahcpoto.

• The New Zealand-bred horse The Monk, who was tra.nferred from Australia .to India in the spring of 1924, effected a surprise victory by winning the Cornwallis Plate (six furlongs) at Calcutta on December 12.

There was a fair measure of support from this quarter for the local candidate, Bright Knight, in the Konini Handicap at Pahiatua yesterday. Novar waited on the field to the turn and then raced them home. Bright Knight, who showed up well all the way, was squeezed back to third place at the end.

Printemps, an outsider, led the way in the Pahiatua Handicap yesterday Bright Day and Opa were kept a long wav back last in the early stages of the* race, and were still anything np to ten lengths behind Printemps at the turn. They finished well when it was too late. Better handled, they would have been first and second. Tall Timber faded out in the end and Modern was a great disappointment, for he failed just when expected to come on. An interesting gallop took place on the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning, when Right and Left. Knighthood, and Musketoon worked together., Musketoon and Bight and Left going a mile and a quarter, while Km'ghthood, who joined in, went about a mile.' Bight and Left finished iu front of Knighthood, who was just ahead of Musketoon. The time was 2.13 1-5 . for the mile and a quarter and 2.3-1-5 for the last round. There is an inclination in some quarters to look with favour upon Air Queen, who is among the acceptors for the Stewards' Handicap at Takapum to-morrow. Air Queen, who is in the same stable as Finelli, also engaged in the sprint to-morrow, provided rather a surprise victory by defeating a warm favourite in Nippy over six furlongs at the Waipa meeting in December, the latter running wide at the turn for home. The Flying King— Vanga filly would require to have improved a good deal to hold her own in the class engaged at the Shore.
