STRUGGLE WITH HIS FATHER

Bayliss, after attacking his wife, opened an artery in iiis left wrist with a pair of scissors, and then tried to shoot himself, but the bullet just grazed his temple. Mrs Bayliss is suffering from bullet wounds in the head. At noon it was not known whether the bullet was still in her head or not.

A son, Harold Bayliss, aged 19, after a struggle with his father, locked him in the house and got, his mother outside on to the back porch. IJe then called a neighbour, who telephoned for Dr. J. C. Pairman and for the police. i The cause of the tragedy is sup-j posed to be jealousy. Bayliss and his family have been living at S Slater Street, for about three or four years. Before that they resided in Hiss Road. i The son, Harold Bayliss, showed! great bravery in getting his mother away from his father,, otherwise the] tragedy might have been still more terrible. His story is a pathetic one. ! When the family arose early this morning, husband and wife seemed to be on the best of terms. Harold heard' his father asking his mother what she wanted in the way of groceries. Hci did not hear his mother’s reply, but aj little later he heard his father tell Mrsj Bayliss to write a list of groceries on] a piece of paper. Bayliss and his wife, were in the kitchen. j

Harold, who was In another room, suddenly heard a shot fired in the kitchen, and rushed in to find his mother lying on the floor. She said to Harold: “I’m dying; your father has shot me."

Bayliss fired two more shots at his wife after Harold got into the kitchen. After getting his mother outside and locking his father in the kitchen, Harold heard another shot.

When the police arrived Bayliss walked out of the front door of the house and wanted to know what was wrong. He was bleeding from the head, and on one hand, and did not seem to realise what he had done.
