CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. ORDINARY BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held on Thursday. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr. T. F. Richards), Cr. 11. A. Bell, deputy-Mayor. occupied the chair. There were also present: Crs. L. M. Morrin, J. Sherris, M. Wells, T. 11. Boyce, P. T. Glanvillc, G. Calvert, town clerk, Mr. W. S. Milburn. and engineer, Mr. T. Dix. Mr. E. James, on behalf of the committee arranging for a complimentary social to Mr. F. Lye, requested the free use of the Town Hall for the function. —The request was granted.

The hon. secretary New Zealand Gas Institute, advised that the second annual meeting would be held at Timaru and Dunedin on February 9 and 13. Mr. Dix was granted leave to attend the conference. The Director-General of Health advised that the N.Z. Sanitary Inspectors’ Association proposed to hold its annual conference at Dunedin from February 10 to 13.—1 t was decided that the engineer (Mr. T. Dix) be given permission to attend the conference. Protection of Trees. Cr. Wells reported on the young trees planted by the Council along the bank of the river by the High Level Bridge.—lt .was agreed that Cr. Bell and the Town Clerk go into the matter of what finance could be spared for the work, and in any case to have the gorse cut and removed from the trees.

Climatic Reserve.

In regard to the Council's deliberations in respect to the Matamata County Council’s request for support of the conservation, for climatic reasons, of the Maungatautari range, the clerk, under date of the J oth ult., pointed out that the reference of the Borough Council to assisting a syndicate to get rid of the area concerned at a high price, is without foundation.

The letter went on to state that previously the Matamata County Council had not supported the proposal on account of the price then asked by the syndicate. Later the land was offered at Government valuation. At the last Matamata Council meeting a member stated that the syndicate was prepared to sell at £1 per acre, and at that figure there could be no suggestion of assisting a scheme to enrich the land owners. The writer presumed that the Council were aware the timber is being cut from the range for milling purposes. The clerk referred to the benefits to the district of conserving the ranges. In view of the report being verified, the Council's support to the project was requested.

On the same subject a letter was received from Messrs. Earl, Kent, Massey and Norlhcroft, solicitors, Auckland, accompanied by the plan ot the area, which was stated to be 3743 acres at the price of £SOOO, equivalent to £1 Gs 8d per acre. The Government valuation was stated to he about £II,OOO, or close on £3 per acre. After a good deal of discussion it was resolved that the water supply committee- be asked to bring down a full report on the matter for the Council’s consideration.

Summer School.

Writing from Ivingsland, Mr. G. H. Stubbs, secretary to the Summer School Committee, requested the use of the Town Hall between January IS and 26 for all available nights for lectures and other features of the movement, for which charge was to be made, the same to be made open to the general public. The letter further stated that 50 men would be in camp on Victoria Square. Cr. Calvert said he understood that upwards of 200 students would be coming. It was decided that the Council do all in its power to assist the Summer School Association, and to make their stay in Cambridge a pleasant one.

Remit to Conference.

At last meeting of the Legal and Finance Committee, the following remit was framed to he forwarded to the Municipal Conference: “That this Council suggests that steps be taken to allow of advertising by means of a public notice board, in order to minimise the expenditure incurred by local bodies in advertising through newspapers.”—Thq Council agreed that the remit go forward to the conference. Works Committee. The following report of the Works Committee was adopted:— Ilautapu Cemetery.—lt was resolved that the town clerk be authorised to arrange with Mr. T. Vanes to make an inspection of the cemetery on Saturday afternoons for tlie purpose of en-

deavouring to complete the existing cemetery plan. It was also decided that the part of the cemetery reserve now being used be closed as soon as ihc additional land is available for burials. It was agreed that the Council's motor road roller be hired to the Rotorua County Council at a rental of £3 per week, for a period of six months, or £3 10s for any lesser period. It was also agreed that the tar sprayer be hired to the Cambridge Road Board at 10s per day, the tar to be dehydrated by the Council for id per gallon, and that the Borough outside staff be offered to the Road Board for the purpose of carrying out their experimental tar sealing. Legal and Finance. The following report of the Legal and Finance Committee was adopted: Town Hall Tariff. —Captain Grove (Salvation Army) requested a reduction in the Town Hall tariff for a young people’s display.—lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Hall Committee with a recommendation for favourable consideration. General.

The Town Clerk submitted a letter from the Band Committee strongly objecting to the tone of the Council’s letter in connection with a resolution requesting the whole of the band to be brought under the control of the Town Clerk’s office. Cr. Glanville stated that there had been some misunderstanding over the matter, and that the band were now quite satisfied with Ibe committee appointed io supervise and safeguard Lbe band instruments. —It was resolved to appoint Cr. Glanville to -explain the council’s position to the Band Committee.

Messrs Treadwell and Sons wrote that there was some doubt as to the validity of the totalling of special rates in the loan proposal for the fire brigade station, and asked the Town Clerk to look into the matter and forward an urgent reply.—lt was resolved tnat the Town Clerk with the borough solicitor, make arrangements for obtaining validation under section 111 of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1913. Accounts on the district fund amounting to £482 4 s 9d were passed for payment. The amount of expenditure for the month of October totalled £1289 8s JOd.

Lease of Section. Mr p. A. Marcroft offered 30s per annum as rent for section 517 in Hall Street.—J t was agreed to accept Mr Marcroft’s offer. The term of lease to be for five years. The Southern Union General Insurance Company solicited a share of the council’s risks. Similar correspondence was received from the Mercantile and General Insurance Company, Lid.—lf was resolved to refer the matter to the Legal and Finance Committee to deal with. The engineer’s report was adopted.
