The mother aiftcewards had the child, and eventually a complaint was made from the sehool where the child attended. When spoken to by an ofilccr oC t-nc National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Bilton said the bov refused to write ids name, bo lie thrashed him. He intended-to kick ‘him out. The woman said slie meant • o neglect the child and it would have to .go into the workhouse. The child was- subsequently removed lo the workhouse. Dr. Harrison Griffin, of Upper Berkeley Street, said the child was severely bruised from the knees to the buttocks, and considerable violence had been' used, His right ear was bruised as if the person thrashing him had held him by the ear. Billon said he only tapped the boy on' the legs with a stick. The magistrate discharged the woman under the Probation Act and sentenced Bilton to two months’ hard labour f6r his “Shocking brutality.”
